Message horsepower. It does this through induction braking and the amount of current it takes to 'hold' the engine at a given RPM is proportional to the torque it is producing. It has no means of directly determining horsepower as that calculation requires work to be done, which would require some change in speed.

An intertial dyno directly determines horsepower, and calculates torque. This is because it can only measure the change of drum speed over time and the resistive load, which is analogous to how the brake dyno works, is in the mass of the drum itself. It requires force to turn the drum, but only the value of work can be determined with an intertial setup.

Fortunately we have the math to allow us to interchange between the two so in either case we can get both figures.
